The enormous hats reched their maximum width in 1911.
They were secured to the elaborate coiffures by long hat pins,with large decorative heads made of leather,enamel and carved ivory in the shape of the flowers or huge coloured stones such as amethyst ot topaz in settings of gold or cut steel.
The projecting points were such a potencial danger in crowded places that protective butts were invented which could be put over the points once the pins were in position.
Tall crowned hats have been designed during the preceding years,but these met with little success until 1911-12,when the wide brimmed hats,having reached in extreme cases a circumference of two yards,were finally beginning to be abandoned.
The high hats had vertical trimmings of large ribbon loops and twists or arrangements of flowers wired to stand erect and plumes were as popular as ever.Conical and square-shaped crowns were also in evidence.
In 1912 styles became smaller,with large crowns fitting lower on the head and small or medium brims.
Feathers were set upright,either at one side or at the back or front of the hat.Sometimes they were set at an angle,or two might be set at the opposite angles to one another.
Brims were often designed to give an effect of flight even when no trimmings were added.
