Hats 1901-1910 (history of fashion)

Edwardian period

Hats 1901-1910

The hats of this period were alaways large and very elaborately trimmed, especially for summer wear when flowers, lace, tulle, chenille and feathers might all form the decoration of one straw hat.
Felt winter hats were somewhat plainer, with low crowns, but these might be covered with loops or runchings of ribbon with quills ans jewelled ornaments.
Trimmings and materials were frequently combined in an extravagant manner, for instance a fur togue with camelias or a fur hat with a cache-peigne of old rose velvet and silk roses and an ornament of upstanding plumes and orchich feather tufts.
Ostrich plumes were especially popular during this period. At first hats were worn uncompromisingly straight on top of the head, but by 1904 they were set all angles.
An extreme forward tilt was very fashionable and in many cases this was so exaggerated that the cache-peigne of flowers or ruched materials was necessary to cover the space between the underside of the back brim and the back of the head.
Many hats and togues, although worn straight, had the back brims narrow or turned up and wider in front, projecting well forward.
An extraordinary variety of materials was used, including paper.
In 1908 hats had large wide crowns when the following years the crowns became lower but still very wide. These hats were not suitable for sportswear,so the need for smaller styles was appeared.
For those who preferred to wear the hats at the sport of motoring, the essensial veil was a necessity,in order to keep the hat steady and protect the hair from the dust. Also the selection of bandeaux,to keep the hats firmly and cofortable in position was essensial and was fitted inside the hats filling the space between the large crown and he wearer's head.
