Shao Yen Chen creates clothing that defies logic; explosive combinations of texture, idiosyncratic fabric choices (nylon string never looked so chic) and an abstract re-imagining of the body’s contours. His designs are at once form-fitting and transformative, creating extreme shapes out that play up the most compelling features. Shoulders are exaggerated with a mountain of fuzzy texture, hips widened by bold swathes of color; the look is striking and strangely sexy. Most avant garde designers take the body and mold it into their own vision, but Shao seems to do the opposite. Working with what is there and adding artistry into every nuance.
