Hats 1918-1930 ( history of fashion )

Large crowned hats with wide brims continued to be popular after the War and they remained in vogue until the early twenties.

They were worn straight and came well down over the brow,whilst the brims dipped on either side or were slightly titled usually to the right.In 1921 was fashionable to wear a hat with the trimmings projecting over the brim.

There was a good del of controversy over the use of plumage in millinery and two bills were put forward by a mumber of M.P.s,one to prohibit the importation of a plumage of birds and the second to prohibit the sale or possesion of plumage illegally imported.

Apart from feathers and flowers or fruit (hanging cherries e.t.c)trimming included embroidery,particularly over the crown and upper side of the brim.

An enormous variety of materials were used for hats and beautiful handwork was a characteristic of the most expensive millinery.

In 1923 the cloche appeared as a appropriate fitting hat for the short hair type.

These hats,with their deep crowns and narrow trims,were pulled down to the eyes,obscuring half of the wearer's face and all her hair with the exception of a curl or two on either cheek.

By the 1926 the cloche was a universal "trend".It became very deep in the crown and was either brimless or had a small brim which was sometimes turned up infront or at one side.

In 1929 crowns were becoming shallower,although they were still plain,and brims were getting larger.

Eyes and eyebrows were begging to reappear,flowers were once more being used for trimming,and a softer more dressy look was apparent by the 1930,shows the type of the hat that become popular at the end of the dacede,The beret.
