A lot of surprises popped up during the Balenciaga S/S 2012 show.
For one, the benched seating broke beneath the svelte fashion crowd, forcing everyone to stand as they viewed the entire runway collection.
Even more shocking, though, was the appearance of denim jeans in the line, typically known for its influential, top luxury appeal. High-waisted with front pleat detailing, the jeans appeared comfortable, yet chic and flattering, proving that head designer Nicolas Ghesquière can indeed do it all.
These were seen this season through with boxy, galactic-style jackets, structured broad-shouldered coats in various silhouettes, high-waist drainpipe pants, and simple fuss-free skirts.
The area Nicolas really showcased his mastery, however, was in his choice of fabric.
Aside from the inky black denim, the pieces were given a modest-meets-modern appeal, with stiff 1960s haute couture fabrics of thick silk ziberline and ribbed ottoman, as well as vibrant lacquered satin and black- and ivory-silk crepe.
